Beschreibung

As a result of the Crusades, European trade blossomed in the thirteenth century. It covered two main trading areas: the far-reaching Mediterranean area and the emerging Hanseatic trade zone. According to the textbook author, major German cities played an important role as mediators between southern and northern as well as eastern Europe. This is how German merchants began to take part in ‘world trade’ between Orient and Occident, which was primarily controlled by financiers in Venice, Genoa and Marseilles.
